First Marking Period

Students in our Art 6 classes completed three projects. The first project they worked on was Picasso Portraits in which they drew a realistic picture of themselves and then created a distorted, Cubistic version of their self-portrait. They embellished the design with colors and patterns.
Seventh graders also created a "Posterized Portrait" in which they traced a posterized image of themselves and used analogous colors to color the areas in with colored pencil.

Here are some samples of some finished paintings. Enjoy!

Another project the 6th graders worked on was "3-D Letters" in which students created a selected letter three-dimensionally using tag board, mat board, masking tape, modeling paste/gesso mixture. Students then painted the boxes to achieve a desired surface design.
The first project that the 7th graders worked on this year was a lettering color study in which students used the colors of the color wheel to create a design with a selected word done in bubble or block letters.

Another project that the 7th graders worked on this marking period was "Posterized Portraits", in which students made a monochromatic redition of their face in colored pencil.

6th graders completed famous paintings...one block at a time. See if you can recognize these paintings!

8th grade Graphic Design classes completed pattern designs called "Casino Carpet", due to the boldness of the colors and the busy patterns.

They also did a "Pop Art Faces" project applying a posterize filter to their pictures and using bright contasting colors to create a bold look.

Famous Artwork...one square at a time!

This year, 6th grade students had a chance to recreate a famous artwork. Each class had their own artwork to recreate. One at a time, the students randomly selected a 1" square piece of a painting that they were instructed to recreate with colored pencils on a larger square piece of white paper. Eventually, the overall artwork was revealed to the students as the squares got completed and assembled together. Most students were able to complete 2-3 squares in each piece of artwork. This activity strengthened the students' observational skills, visual perception and analysis of shapes and colors, as well as colored pencil techniques.
Do you recognize these paintings?

Monsters vs. Aliens

Inspired by the "Monster vs. Aliens" movie, 6th grade students in our art class have been working on their own creatures. They used Model Magic and created their sculptures based on sketches they had drawn of their idea. They also painted them with watercolor and embellished them with feathers and glitter.
